A beach town, a river outside your window... and clients in Europe who might want you on a call at 10:00. π Plenty of remote professionals dream of working from Sri Lanka, but the time difference and one big question stop them: can I actually get my work done there?
Good news: you can, and during the European winter it works especially well. From late October to late March Sri Lanka is 4.5 hours ahead of Central European Time, so your mornings are yours and a European workday lands in the afternoon and evening. Below is a practical guide to working from Weligama, on the south coast: the time difference, internet, SIM cards, visa, weather and costs. (And if you would rather do it with a group, our Weligama workation is waiting for you in February: take a peek at our Sri Lanka workation π.) π
4.5 hours ahead. From late October to late March, 9:00 in Central Europe is 13:30 in Sri Lanka (5.5 hours ahead of the UK).
Who it suits. Very comfortable for freelancers who set their own hours, for people who work with European companies or teams and for people already on Asian schedules.
Internet. Fine on the south coast, and a local SIM or an eSIM keeps you online from the moment you land.
Visa. Since 25 May 2026 nationals of 40 countries get a free 30-day tourist ETA, which you apply for before you travel.
Weather. Warm all year, around 21 to 30 degrees, with a dry season from December to February.
The vibe. Surf at sunrise, breakfast on the beach and your European workday after lunch. π΄
How big is the time difference between Sri Lanka and Europe?
During the European winter, from late October to late March, Sri Lanka is 4.5 hours ahead of Central European Time (CET). Sri Lanka has no daylight saving, so when Europe moves to summer time the gap becomes 3.5 hours. For clients in the UK, the gap is 5.5 hours in winter and 4.5 hours in summer.
9:00 in Europe is 13:30 in Sri Lanka. Here is the maths for a normal European workday in winter:
Central Europe (CET)Sri Lanka9:0013:3012:30 (lunch)17:0017:0021:30
So a European workday starts after lunch and ends in the late evening. Everything before 13:30 is yours.
Does it work if you do not work with European companies?
It is very comfortable for three kinds of people: freelancers who can choose their own hours, people who work with European companies or teams and people who already live on an Asian schedule. If you can shape your own day, Sri Lanka is easy.
New York is the fun one. In the European winter, New York is 10.5 hours behind Sri Lanka, so a New York morning lands in your evening (9:00 in New York is 19:30 in Sri Lanka and noon is 22:30). A 17:00 finish in New York is 3:30 at night, but if you are willing to swap a few surf and beach hours for some extra hours at night, why not! π
What does a working day look like from Sri Lanka?
It looks like a holiday that goes to work after lunch! Here is how a day can unfold:
π 8:00, surf in Weligama. One of the easiest and most fun spots on the planet to try surfing, already around 30 degrees.
π₯₯ Or breakfast on the beach. If waves are not your thing, a lovely breakfast by the sea does the job.
π½οΈ Lunch. Plenty of time to eat well and relax before Europe sits down at its desks.
π» 13:30, coworking. Europe sits down at its desks and so do you.
π Late afternoon, a mastermind with the group. Right on the European lunch break.
Other mornings can be a cooking class, snorkeling with turtles early in the day, yoga in the forest, a tea plantation visit or a safari. Imagine a swim with turtles at sunrise and a client call at 14:00 with the sea still on your skin. π’
That is exactly the rhythm we built our Weligama workation around: free mornings for the island, work in the afternoon. If that sounds like your kind of week, have a look at how our Sri Lanka workation works. π΄

How does the internet work, and which SIM card should you take?
On the south coast the internet is generally good, but it depends on the building, so ask your accommodation for a speed test before you commit. CafΓ©s and coworking spaces in Weligama town report around 25 to 30 Mbps. The Mate Workation Villa has Starlink satellite internet, so video calls are covered.
For your phone, Dialog has the best island-wide coverage and Mobitel is the other main carrier. SIM cards are sold at the airport and in convenience stores and you need your passport. An eSIM (Airalo, Holafly and Saily are popular) is the easiest option if you want to be online the moment you land.
Do you need a visa to work from Sri Lanka?
You need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before you arrive, even when it is free. Since 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the UK and the US, can get a free 30-day tourist ETA. If you want to stay longer, you can apply for an extension and pay the visa fee.
Rules change, and the official list is the one that counts, so check eta.gov.lk and the Sri Lankan immigration department for your passport, and for what applies to working remotely, before you book flights.
What is the weather like during the European winter?
Warm and sunny, and perfect for the beach. Weligama stays between about 21 and 30 degrees all year. The dry season on the south coast runs from December to February, which is the heart of the European winter, and there is a second dry spell from June to August. The wetter months are March to May and September to November. Our workation runs in February, right in the dry season. βοΈ
Where is the best place to base yourself, and how do you get there?

For remote workers and digital nomads, our pick is Weligama, a beach town on the south coast. It has some of the friendliest surf breaks in the country, cafΓ©s and coworking spaces, guesthouses and hostels, and plenty to explore close by: sunset at Galle Fort, turtles at Mirissa and day trips to Ella and the hill country.
There is no airport in Weligama. The international airport is in Negombo, about 30 minutes north of Colombo, and from Colombo you can take the train from Fort Station or a highway bus to Weligama. In town most things are within about a 15 minute walk, and tuk-tuks are everywhere, so agree on the price before you get in.
If it is your first time in Sri Lanka, you can also see Weligama in good company: our workation will be there in February, so you can enjoy the island with a group of remote professionals, keep working and skip the planning, in a villa with Starlink internet. See the Sri Lanka workation. π§‘
How much does it cost to live in Weligama?
It is very affordable, especially when you eat locally. A local meal costs about 800 to 1,600 Sri Lankan rupees (roughly β¬2 to β¬4), a tuk-tuk ride about 500 rupees (about β¬1.30) and a local Lion beer 1,000 to 1,500 rupees (about β¬2.60 to β¬4). Western food costs more.

What should you know before you go?
Weligama is warm, salty and lively, which is part of its charm. The roads are busy, so tuk-tuks are the easiest way around. Cash is widely used, so keep some on you. Grocery shopping works a little differently from home, which makes eating local the easy choice. Crime is generally described as low, and as anywhere, common sense goes a long way.
Who is working from Sri Lanka for?
It is for you if you work with European companies or a European team and love the idea of mornings by the sea. It is for freelancers who can build their own day and for people who already live on an Asian schedule. And it is for anyone who wants to see Sri Lanka for the first time without giving up work, ideally with good company.
Why is it worth joining a Mate workation in Sri Lanka?
Because the time difference is the easy part, and a group makes everything else easier too. Here is what you get when you come with us:
𧳠Everything is sorted. You arrive and the plan is ready: a villa by the river, a work rhythm built around European hours and activities already set, so your free mornings are for enjoying the island and not for planning it.
π€ A group put together with care. Every participant has a video call with us before the trip, so the mix of personalities and professions works and you land among people you will actually want to spend time with.
π§ Masterminds with real professionals. Sessions where the group shares skills and experience, so you learn from people doing different work than you and get real answers to real questions.
ποΈ Mornings full of Sri Lanka. A cooking class, snorkeling with turtles, group workouts and an optional day trip to Ella. Every activity is optional, so you join what you feel like.
π· A community that looks after you. Our Community Lead helps everyone feel comfortable and be themselves, so even the more introverted guests find their little group and end up with a glass of wine after dinner with people they met only a few days ago.
π» Holiday and work in one. You keep your clients and your routine, with the sea in the morning and your desk in the afternoon.
If that sounds like your kind of trip, see the Sri Lanka workation and come meet your group in Weligama. π§‘
So, can you really work from Sri Lanka?
Yes, and the time difference is the part that surprises people in a good way. You get a free morning for the sea, the waves and the breakfast on the beach, and your European workday starts when you are ready for it. Do it on your own, or do it with a group of remote professionals on the same rhythm, and the 4.5 hours turn into the best part of the plan. π΄
