Is there a minimum stay?
Two weeks. Mate is a community-based coliving, not a B&B or a hostel. The whole thing only works when people arrive ready to commit to the group, not just a bed. Two weeks is the floor; most guests stay a month or two, and plenty extend once they're here.
Who is Mate for?
Remote workers, founders, designers, writers, engineers: people who work independently and would rather not do it alone. Solo travellers, couples, a real mix of ages and nationalities. The common thread is wanting community and a slower pace, not a party.
Where exactly is it?
Amantea, on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, in the deep south of Italy, roughly halfway between Naples and Sicily. Pastel houses stacked into the cliff, a Saracen old town behind, the beach below.
How do I get there?
By train: Amantea has its own station, connected to the whole country, and it's a 10-minute walk from the house. By air: fly into Lamezia Terme (SUF), about 20 minutes away by bus, car or taxi. Reggio Calabria is also reachable by train down the coast. Once you're booked we'll send door-to-door directions.
How many people are there at once?
Eight ensuite rooms, so between 8 and 12 guests at any time, plus our on-site community manager. Small on purpose: big enough for energy, small enough that you'll know everyone's name by the second dinner.
Do you organise activities?
Yes, a community manager lives on site and curates something most days: aperitivos, workshops, nights out, potluck dinners, beach BBQs, day trips down the coast. Join everything or nothing: it's your stay, but the rhythm is there if you want it.
I'm coming solo. Will I be on my own?
Most people arrive solo. The whole format is designed so you won't stay that way: shared meals, a daily rhythm of things to do, and two founders who make the introductions. Strangers at check-in, mates at the end.
